Unlocking Homeownership with Manitoba Metis Federation's Grant Program

by Stephanie Baron, realtor

In an effort to empower and uplift Metis Citizens, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) has introduced an exceptional grant program aimed at making homeownership dreams a reality. This initiative is a testament to the Federation's commitment to supporting its citizens' aspirations for stable & secure housing.

Generous Grants and Forgivable Assistance

Under this program, eligible Metis individuals can receive financial assistance equivalent to 5% of the home's purchase price, up to an impressive sum of $18,000. Moreover, applicants can also access additional support for closing costs, with a cap of $2,500, making the total maximum grant an impressive $20,500.

What truly sets this grant apart is its forgivable nature. If recipients maintain their newly acquired home as their principal residence for a decade, the First Time Home Purchase Program grant will be forgiven and discharged from the property title, relieving them of this financial burden.

Who is Eligible?

To qualify for this invaluable assistance, applicants must be able to prove their Metis citizenship and be at least 18 years old. Additionally, meeting the mortgage requirements based on lender and default mortgage insurer guidelines is crucial.

The purchased property must serve as the applicant's primary residence and should not exceed the maximum home purchase price of $600,000. Importantly, applicants should not have ownership in any real estate, including land, with a market value exceeding $30,000.

Financial eligibility criteria include a household taxable income below $100,000 as per CRA's notice of assessments and combined liquid assets less than $60,000.

A Pathway to Metis Homeownership

According to the MMF, this grant program provides financial assistance and signifies a pathway to stability and security for Metis families. By offering substantial support and establishing reasonable criteria, the Manitoba Metis Federation believes they are fostering a brighter future for its citizens.

Through initiatives like these, the Federation continues to make a significant impact, enriching the lives of Metis individuals and strengthening communities across the region.
