Don’t Miss Winnipeg’s Last Yard Waste Collection of the Year
BY SCOTT MOORE | OCTOBER 2, 2026Fall in Winnipeg means a few things: cooler mornings, shorter days, and a checklist of outdoor tasks to get your home prepared for winter.
It also means Winnipeg’s curbside yard waste collection season is coming to an end soon.
If you still have leaves to rake, gardens to clean out, or branches to trim, be sure to get it done while the City’s curbside yard waste program is still running so you can take advantage of having the City pick up those bags of leaves and branches rather than having to dispose of them yourself!
When is the last yard waste pickup in Winnipeg?
The City of Winnipeg typically announces the final dates for curbside yard waste collection in mid-to-late October.
The last pickup date varies from year to year depending on the weather, but collection usually wraps up around the end of October or in early November.
We recommend that you aim to have your fall cleanup done — or at least most of it — by mid-October to be sure you don’t miss the deadline for pick up.
What can you put out for yard waste collection?
The City accepts common organic yard waste, including:
Leaves
Grass clippings
Garden and plant material
Crab apples
Pumpkins with decorations and candles removed
Small tree branches
Branches need to be bundled and should be no more than 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter and one metre long.
Yard waste can be placed in paper yard waste bags, cardboard boxes or reusable containers without lids and left in the same location as where you leave your garbage and recycling containers. Containers should weigh no more than 50 pounds (22 kg).
What if you miss the last collection?
If you do miss the final curbside pickup, Winnipeg residents can bring yard waste to a 4R Winnipeg Depot, where it can be dropped off for free.
Storing bags of leaves or debris over the winter is something we definitely don’t recommend.
If you leave bags of leaves outdoors, you’ll be dealing with a soggy, mouldy mess in the spring. But if you store them in a garage or shed, you’ll create a nice winter home for mice and other pests, which will have its own set of consequences.
Also, don’t rake leaves or other yard debris into the street. Leaves can block street drains, contribute to ponding and potentially increase the risk of basement flooding.
All in all, it's best just to get the yard clean-up on the radar now, while you have plenty of time to get it done before the final City pick up.
While you’re outside, do one last exterior check
If you’re already spending a Saturday afternoon tackling the yard, it’s a good opportunity to knock a few other items off the pre-winter checklist:
Clean out your gutters
Disconnect and put away outdoor hoses
Put away or cover patio furniture
Check exterior taps
Clear leaves and debris away from your foundation
Check that downspouts are clear and directing water away from the house
A couple of hours outside now can save you some aggravation once the snow arrives — and in Winnipeg, we all know that could happen sooner than we’d like.
Thinking about selling your Winnipeg home?
Fall cleanup is particularly important if you’re planning to list your home over the winter or early next spring.
Buyers start forming an impression of a property before they ever walk through the front door. A tidy, well-maintained exterior helps show that the home has been cared for — even when the yard is eventually covered in snow.
If you're considering selling and wondering what you should tackle before listing — and what you can leave alone — The Moore Group can help you figure out where your time and money will have the biggest impact.
