Pro Tip for Sellers: Schedule Possession with Garbage Day in Mind
BY Scott Moore, Realtor | August 22, 2025
When you're selling your home, there’s a lot to think about, repairs, packing, paperwork, but here’s one small detail that can make a big difference: schedule the possession date with garbage pickup in mind.
Whether you're moving out or the buyers are moving in, chances are there’s going to be a lot of trash. Packing materials, broken furniture, junk drawers finally being emptied, or just that final bag of garbage from the fridge cleanup. Moving means there will be more garbage than usual.
And it's not just you. Buyers often have their own pile of trash on moving day, pizza boxes, plastic wrap, and moving supplies. Imagine the welcome they’ll get if the bins are full and trash won’t be picked up for days.
In Winnipeg, garbage and recycling pickup is once a week, and if possession falls the day after collection, you’ll be stuck holding onto garbage for longer than they’d like.
A better option? Coordinate possession to fall on or just after garbage pickup day. This gives you a chance to leave empty bins behind and gives the buyers a fresh start.
It’s a simple detail but it’s one of those things that can make the transition smoother for everyone involved.
