9th Annual Food Drive

We created this Food Drive to supplement the hot breakfast program provided to students at William Whyte School - a K-8 school with approximately 250 students, located at 200 Powers St and Manitoba Ave. The nutrition program help students kick start their day off right.

Over the years, we have collected and delivered truckloads of non-perishable food items to the nutrition program at William Whyte School - helping the school stock their pantry for winter with items such as cereals, oatmeal, juice, dried fruit, apple sauce, pancake mix and so much more!

In 2024, we switched the focus to all non-perishable food items. The school continues to get funding for the in-school nutrition support so that means that any additional donations, like the food items donated through our Food Drive, to go directly towards the families of William Whyte.

The Wish List

We are collecting non-perishable foods like:

  • Cereal

  • Peanut Butter

  • Oatmeal

  • Granola

  • Juice

  • Canned soup

  • Canned & dried fruit

  • Powdered milk

  • Pancake mix

  • Muffin mix

  • Crackers

But everything helps.

Why William Whyte School?

Letter from Mayor Scott Gillingham about our 8th Annual Food Drive in 2024.

We first found out about the need for donations for this breakfast program back in 2017, in an article in the Free Press sharing the school’s need for food had already outstripped their funding by the middle of November. Since that time, we have continued to gather donations for the families of William Whyte, guided by the spirit of generosity, reciprocity, and caring for one another as part of our shared responsibility to our communities.

At The Moore Group, we acknowledge that we operate on Treaty 1 Territory and the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Anishininewuk, Dakota Oyate, Denesuline and Nehethowuk Nations, and on the homeland of the Red River Metis. We also recognize that the water we drink comes from Treaty 3 territory of Shoal Lake 40 First Nation and our electricity comes from Treaty 5 territory.

We recognize the unique relationship between communities and food, and the importance of caring for the land and water that sustain us. In the spirit of generosity and reciprocity, this food drive is one way we come together to support one another.

How does the nutrition program work?

William Whyte School provides their kids with a hot breakfast every school day, but they also provide snacks, lunches, and hampers to families with a combination of purchased food and food they receive from Manitoba Harvest. When a student isn’t bringing a lunch to school or returning to school after going home for lunch but not having eaten, the school will provide a lunch.

Who funds this program?

William Whyte School receives funding from Universal Nutrition Funding through the province. The school has told us that the provincial government does provide adequate funding for the in-school nutrition support so that means that any additional donations, like the food items donated through our Food Drive, to go directly towards the families that need it most. Our donations are very much appreciated at William Whyte School.

How is the budget looking for the 2025/26 school year?

The rising cost of groceries continues to put pressure on the budget forecast for 2025/2026. Overall food prices have gone up between 3-5% this year. Every little bit we can contribute helps ensure that we all have access to healthy, nutritious food.
