How often do I need to change my furnace filter?

BY Scott Moore, Realtor | November 28, 2025

If your home’s feeling a bit dusty or your furnace seems to be running non-stop, it might be time to check your filter. It’s a small task that can make a big difference in how efficiently your furnace runs, especially through a long Winnipeg winter.

Most homes should have the furnace filter changed every 1–3 months if you have a standard 1–2 inch filter.

If it’s 3–4 inches, you can change it every 6–9 months and for 5–6 inch filters, every 9–12 months is usually fine.

If you have pets, allergies, or notice a lot of dust, aim for once a month.

During the winter season, it’s a good idea to take a quick look monthly, if the filter looks gray or dirty, swap it out. The dirtier your filter, the harder your furnace has to work, which can lead to higher costs and possibly a hefty repair bill down the road. I typically set a reoccurring reminder in my calendar and that keeps me on track.

Stock up on a few filters before winter hits so you’re ready when it’s time to change. It’s a simple job that can save you money and keep your home feeling comfortable all season long.
