Pro Tip for Homeowners: Take a Walkthrough Video of your Home for Insurance Purposes
BY Scott Moore, Realtor | April 10, 2026When you're living in your home, there’s a lot you don’t think twice about, furniture, electronics, clothes, and all the little things that make your space yours. Here’s one simple detail that can make a big difference: take a walkthrough video of your home for insurance purposes.
It might not feel important right now but if you ever have to make an insurance claim because of fire, theft, or water damage, having a record of your belongings can save you a lot of time and stress.
All it takes is your phone and a few minutes. Walk through your home room by room and record everything. Open closets, show what’s inside drawers, and capture furniture, electronics, and anything of value. You don’t need it to be perfect, just make sure it’s thorough.
It also helps to talk while you’re recording. Mention brand names, when you bought items, or anything that might help identify them later. These small details can make the claims process much smoother.
Once you’re done, store the video somewhere safe. Upload it to the cloud, email it to yourself, or keep a copy somewhere outside your home. That way you can still access it if anything happens to your phone or computer.
It’s a quick and easy task but it’s one of those things that can make a difficult situation a lot easier to handle.
