Update: Where can I donate to support wildfire evacuees in Manitoba?
by Scott Moore, Realtor | June 20, 2025
A couple weeks ago, I shared different ways to support wildfire evacuees in Manitoba. Many of our neighbours are still being evacuated, so the need is still there. Since then, I wanted to highlight two new opportunities to donate.
1. Starting with our animal friends: The St. Norbert Community Centre is now operating a pet shelter, open daily from 11AM–6PM for intake. This temporary shelter is providing safe shelter and care for up to 60 animals.
If you’re looking to donate, please visit: https://winnipeghumanesociety.ca/2025-wildfire-response/ — the most requested items are: Cat litter, litter boxes and scoops, storage totes and/or shipping boxes, poop bags, disposable plastic exam gloves, newspaper
Here are some key details about the shelter:
Evacuees with pets are required to register with the Canadian Red Cross at redcross.ca or 1-800-863-6582 for coordinated support and transportation.
Unregistered evacuees with pets are also welcome at the facility, if space allows.
Families can visit their pets daily during operating hours (11–6PM).
The pop-up runs like a WHS shelter, offering vet care, housing, and exercise in the indoor hockey rink.
Only Winnipeg Humane Society staff, volunteers, and families of pets are allowed to visit, given the limited space.
2. Financial support: Evacuees are now eligible to apply for financial support through the Canadian Red Cross. Eligibility requirements are:
Reside in Manitoba
Have a primary home in an evacuated community
Be registered with the Canadian Red Cross
The amount you receive varies, $34/day for individuals 13 and older and $27/day for children 12 and under. Applications are completed online or by calling the Red Cross. Most importantly, register with the Red Cross for support.
If you looking to support evacuees, you can donate online at the Canadian Red Cross and remember that everyone $1 donated turned into $3 through a matching program with the Governments of Manitoba and Canada.
Let’s support each other during tough times!
