What Do I Need to Do on Possession Day in Winnipeg?
BY Scott Moore, Realtor | January 30, 2026Possession day is exciting, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming. You’ve got keys in hand, boxes everywhere, and a long to-do list running through your head. The good news? There are only a few important things you really need to focus on right away.
Here’s what we recommend on possession day in Winnipeg.
Once possession has officially happened, you have 24 hours to check that everything included with the home is there and working as it should be. Take your time and go through:
All appliances
Heating and cooling systems
Plumbing and electrical
Any inclusions listed in your offer (window coverings, garage door openers, fixtures, etc.)
If something isn’t working, missing, or doesn’t look right, contact your realtor and lawyer immediately. Even if it feels minor, it’s always better to flag issues right away while timelines still matter. A quick walkthrough now can save a lot of stress later.
You’ll want utilities set up as of possession day so there are no interruptions or billing issues.
In Winnipeg, this usually means:
City of Winnipeg for water
Manitoba Hydro for electricity and gas
If you haven’t already done this, make it one of your first tasks. It’s a quick call or online setup, and once it’s done, you can cross it off your list. After this, you can begin changing your address at the bank, workplace, children’s schools, etc — find the full list here.
Don’t Rush — Take It Slow. It’s tempting to start unpacking everything right away, but possession day doesn’t have to be exhausting.
Order dinner in.
Sit on the floor if you have to.
Walk through the house and take it all in.
This is your home now, and there’s no prize for finishing everything on day one. Enjoy the moment.
